How do you make a fire really hot for blacksmithing use?
I’m trying to make knives out of railroad spike and I can’t get the spike hot enough to flatten it out very much. I’ve tried using anthracite coal, bituminous coal, charcoal, and wood as possible fuel sources. I am currently using charcoal and wood and I am using a leaf blower as my bellows. Am I doing something wrong? Please help!
The people I have watched usually use coal for their fires. Sometimes they have to use propane fires as we get into fire restriction and the Forest Service deems propane “safer”.
You have to keep your rr spike in the fire til it is really red hot then hammer it for a bit then reheat it til it is really red hot again.
Perhaps your leaf blower is putting too much air into your fire? Most of the Blacksmiths I have watched use a little “wind” then not much then a little more. They don’t keep the “wind” going all the time.
I used to stand behind my dad’s forge and crank the blower. He would say when to make “wind” and when to quit. Really nasty hot work for a kid! That was like more than 50 years ago!
