the bessa is great. I like how the viewfinder displays +2/-2 stops of exposure. it is good when zoning. I’m infected with G.A.S. I’m seeking help one day at a time. I’m just curious. Ponies, I think that’s a great answer. Thanks.

The M5 and later have built-in meters. For the M4 and older you can buy a tiny meter than clips on the top plate or slides into the accessory shoe. Voigtlander makes a nice one.
The Leicas that do have meters use either TTL metering by bouncing light off of a white dot on the shutter curtain, or they use a separate window for the meter, and the display is either with a matchstick or diodes, but they all provide just a center weighted reading that does indicate how many stops you’re over/under. If you need more flexibility/ precision, use a hand held meter. Gossen makes nice ones.
Batteries? The M5, M6, and MP only need them for the meter. If the batteries die on an M7, you also still have a working camera but only with shutter speeds of 1/60th and 1/125th.
Flash… up to the M4 you have a cold shoe (just an attachment point for a flash, which still needs to be connected by a cable to work) but the M5 and later have hot shoes (which trigger the flash automatically.) TTL cameras also give you the extra wizardry of TTL flash. Off-camera flash is also possible but I’m not sure why you’d want to do that with a Leica.
